186a Clapham High Street, London, S.W.4. Tories anxious for June poll THE TORY press is rooting for a June general election on the basis of yesterday's The 'Daily Express' delightedly headlined June is bustin' out all over'; the 'Sun' 'Labour way " way, out front; and 'surfing home on a strong incoming tide.

The Poll - which gives Labour an overall lead of 7.5 per cent over the Toriesshows a • remarkable 12 per cent swing towards the Labour Party in a single month. Last month's Poll gave the Tories a lead of 4.5 per cent.

Marginals

A further reason for caution in assessing these results is that in 15 key marginal constituencies the Labour lead is only 2 per cent, compared with 8.5 per cent in the same constituencies at the 1966 General Election.

Poll results in the past have proved a less than reliable guide.

y-elections in Uctober las year the National Opinion Poll was forecasting a comfortable Labour win in all five constituencies.

In the event, Labour lost Swindon and held Newcastle by only 1,042 votes.

Clearly, the Tories have good class reasons for trying to stampede Wilson into an early General Election.

Urgency

The worsening crisis in the capitalist world economy, highlighted by the continuing slide on Wall St, adds urgency to the employers' demands for 'strong government'.

In addition, the Tories appear quietly confident that their well-oiled and carefully Dre pared election machine will powerful factor mobilizing the middle-class. Gallup Poll result.

But above all, the Tory leaders fear the growing antiTary feeling which is swinging the working class into voting solidly along class lines.

The real target of the Tory campaign is the trade unions.

Assault

Selsdon Man and his neanderthal press are preparing a ruthless assault on the basic organizations of the working class.

That is why the whole of Fleet St devoted itself unanimously to the lying witch-hunt against Rosemary Whippe, and why the same press is doing its best to generate a similar atmosphere around the tenacious Pilkington strike.

The Tories, taking advantage of the craven capitulations of the Labour government and its parliamentary 'left' wing, want to climax their campaign with a McCarthyite 'red scare' U.S. labour must Negro policeman searches a curfew breaker while a National Guardsman looks on Socialist Labour

(temporarily, course) blocked by the reactionaries, let us investigate, with all the 'left unity' we can muster, another one.

The determination of workers and peasants to struggle better conditions against all attacks is resulting in big support for the Stalinists' election campaign.

Massive meetings havé already been held in many parts of the country.

But until the working class is broken from the grip of the Stalinists organized around the policies of a revolutionary party, the threat to the most basic organization of the Italian labour movement will remain. which will, they hope, confuse backward workers and drive the middle-class into the Tory ranks.

At the same time, they are trying to build up a provocative atmosphere around demonstrations like the Grosvenor Square Vietnam march last Saturday.

Further witch-hunts are now on the agenda as the Tory press gets into its stride.

Whatever the date of the election, the only answer to the Tory campaign remains the fight for a massive Labour vote to keep • the Tories out and to build the Workers Press which answers the witch-hunt blow for blow.
