Hume attUlster mutants JOHN HUME, 'liberal' Derr, Jusinessman who emerged last year as a civil rights leader and was elected MP for the Fovle division. has now viciousiy attacked the voung workers who bore the brunt His attack is part of the frantic campaign of Gerry Fitt MP, and others-including the Stalinists-to suppress all possibility of a mass movement against the Unionists and the British troops; leaving the opportunist politicians to do a deal with the Tories at Westminster.
Hume's attack is contained in an interview given to the 'Derry Journal' in its issue of August 18.
His answers confirm in every detail the warnings given in the Workers Press on the moves for a 'united opposition' by Fitt.
This opposition was to have included Hume. Its formation is said to be encouraged by the British Labour Party and is welcomed by the Communist Party.
'GREATER PRICE' According to the Derry Journal, 'Mr Hume warned about the price already paid even greater price that might have to be paid by present and future citizens of Derry; unless the elected leaders of the people were allowed to tackle the crucial issues in Northern Ireland without those issues being blurred by what he described "meaningless street confrontations":
This, is exactly in line with Fitt's statement that the parliamentarians were being barrassed by 'groups claiming to speak for the people' who had never received a vote at an election.
Hume and Fitt thus prepare the way for the state machine out repressions against 'troublemakers'.
And how are these 'elected leaders' setting about dealing with 'the crucial issues'?
In answer to the question 'What is your attitude Westminster?' Hume replied :
*I would seek a suspension of Stormont, with an interim form of direct rule for a limited period, while alternative constitutional arrangements: were worked out, which would ensure a full share in decision-making for all sections of the community in Northern Ireland.
'In order, however, that our hand be as strong as possible, in such a situation it is absolutely essential that there be no further rioting in the streets. It is the responsibility of everyone in the city to see this is so.
• A serious responsibility also rests on the security forces to make sure that they do not pursue policies which provoke community resentment.' (Our emphasis.)
What could be clearer?
If this statement is compared with the speeches of Stalinist spokesmen Barr and Woddis, reported in Thursmodernization scheme.
Only about 1,200 of the 4,000-odd London National Amalgamated Stevedores' and Dockers' members attended the decisive the struggle.
ay's Workers Press, it is pparent that all these elelents have agreed to do verything possible to comletely suppress the mass lovement in Ulster and to urn everything over to the arliamentary opposition in rder to make a deal with leath and Maudling.
This is the surest way to ring about the victory of the lost right-wing forces in Jister, even though it is put orward as a tactic to unite 1970: Thirty years since Trotsky's assassination SOCIALIST meeting. Voting figures The decision means that Phase Two — involving Measured-Day Work, speedfree manning, shift working and the prospect of large-scale redundancies - will almost certainly begin operation in London before the end of next month.
Wage rates under the new deal will be. "3f 10s for dockworkers and "£28 for light duty men -- an increase of precisely f2 on previous offers.
In the words of one executive member the deal means "penal servitude for life'.
No lead The union's executive made no recommendation either way and told the meeting that members would have to make up their own minds about the deal.
This lack of a clear lead encouraged the scheme's supporters to stampede the meeting into acceptance on the grounds, that the 'end of the road' had been reached.
this declaration — dated July 25, 1970.
'Today it is necessary to demand the absolute repeal of the decree of June 12, 1968. All organizations and tendencies claiming to be socialist must have their legal rights, their right to organize and their right to freedom of expression completely restored without delay.
"The use of decrees which can place political militants and tendencies in an illegal situation is a method of repression and provocation and must be destroyed.

"The real defence of demo. cratic liberties is to use them to strike a blow at the anti-working class offensive: that is, to force the repeal of the decree of June 12, 1968. For this reason all working-class democratic organizations to unite o force this repeal ..
The decision of the Coun cil of State] must not for one instant let us forget that at present some organizations remain arbitrarily dissolved, that some militants remain in prison for the violation of press laws, that the right to strike is threatened..

Bitter
The decision came as a bitter disappointment to many of the militant dockers who had expected the "blue' to stand out and defeat Devlin.
Several speakers at yesterday's meeting pointed out that the present Devlin proposals differ only marginally from those advanced by the employers in March 1969 and declared completely unacceptable by the 'blue'.
Supporters of the deal advanced the phonev line that with strong shop stewards the deal could be amended and improved while in operation.
