Stalinism
Between August 1925 and May 1, 1926, the Communist Party was converted into an .instrument of this Stalinist policy, so that no independent revolutionary struggle was taken up against the General Council traitors. This, the question of building the independent revolutionary party, was and still is the fundamental question. The revision of Marxism on this question was what ensured the defeat of the 1926 strike.
The fact that Sagall and the editors of 'Socialist Worker' published his article in such a way as to completely obscure Stalinism's role is the surest indication that they are determined enemies of Marxism, determined to cut off the working class. from its Marxist theoretical and political heritage......
One of the many positive aspects of the present situation is that it forces the position of these revisionists completely into the open.
FEDERA YOUR NEXT PERSONMEL, MANAGERunion laws. Giant prices jump in THE POLISH Communist Party Central Committee was meeting in Warsaw this week to discuss the country's economic problems, highlighted by sweep. ing increases in food prices. - The food price rises were announced at the weekend. together with cuts in the prices of household goods.
But the government has admitted that the increases outweigh the cuts and there will be a steep rise in the cost of living.
This week's Committee session was three months overdue, and there has clearly been disagreement at the top over the economic problems.
Under the official terms of the increases, 46 food and fuel items will rise in price by between 10 and 30 per cent, while 40 other items will be cheaper.
Meat products
Meat and meat products go up an average of 17.6 per cent, flour 16 per cent, fish ll per cent, jam 36.8 per cent, some kinds of sugar 14.2 per cent and winter milk 8 per cent.
Coke goes up 20 per cent, hard coal 10 per cent and brown coal 14 per cent.
The prices of fabrics, knitwear and stockings made from synthetic fibres are down, but cotton and linen fabrics go up sharply.
Inability
Root of the problems is the bureaucracy's inability to overcome the food and fuel shortage, and the measures are largely an effort to regulate demand by pricing items out of the reach of sections of workers.
Increased production coststhe given reason for many of the rises — are due largely to the Gomulka regime's inability to win the confidence of the peasantry and raise industrial production.
This crisis lies behind the AS ITALIAN railwaymen launched a three-hour national strike yesterday to back their claims for improved wages and pensions, the centre-lett government faces a fresh political crisis.
The centre-left (Christian Democrats, Republicans, Social Democrats and Socialist Party) coalition in the Milan city council split last week when the Social Democratic and Republican representatives resigned in protest against the voting on the city, budget for the coming year.
It was passed by a combined vote of Christian Democrats and Socialist Party representatives, with the benevolent abstention of the Communist Party.

Amount enclosed E schism carries the national government further in the direction of a formal political 'understanding' between the Christian Democrats (the main employers' party) and the Stalinists.
More and more capitalist politicians are now looking to such an outcome, and the most strident objectives in fact come from the professional anti-Communists within President Saragat's Social Democratic The collaboration of the CP leaders is increasingly needed to keep the movement of the working class within responsible' channels.
As the city of Rome and the surrounding area was paralysed by the latest in the series of regional strikes for reforms, it became clear that even on the minimal and deceptive programme put forward by the combined union leadership, the labour movement is prepared for a trial of strength with the state and the employers.
DEMOS Similarly the demonstrations launched against the trial of the Basque nationalists by the Spanish dictatorship — actions which have, in many cases, anticipated the call of the CP leaders-testify to the fact that the Italian labour movement is alert to the threat of fascism at home.
In Milan on Sunday night thousands of young workers and students, demonstrating against the Burgos trial, clashed with police and fascists in the city centre. 42-year-old student, Saverion Saltarelli, died after being coshed on the head by a policeman.
