to go UPPER CLYDE Shipbuilders wants the government to hand Crossman pressed on Crossman speaking at Thursday night's meeting. 'NEW STATESMAN' editor. and former Cabinet minister Richard Crossman was' sharply questioned at a London rally on Thursday night about the Labour government's role in the 'security watch' on Rudi Dutschke.

Crossman was speaking a crowded meeting called to protest the Tory government tribunal branded him a poten- Concerning Or Pallis decision to deport Dutschke after a semi-secret immigration tial security risk.

He claimed the matter had never been discussed in Cabinet and he did not know whether the watch had been officially instigated. In any case, he said, it wasn't the Labour government which began the practice of tapping telephones.

The Labour government could not be very proud of TEN GUERRILLAS many more injured struck deep into Lel raid on Palestinian Sidon.

IN THE past few days we understand that Dr Pallis of the "Solidarity' group has been very agitated, complalnIng that the Workers Press has 'fingered' him.

We suggest to him that he cools off and answers the simple, but very Important questions that arise out of the Dutschke case.

According to some reports, from sources close to Dr Pallis, It is alleged that the Doctor himself did the intervlews with Mr Relchenbach with the assistance of Dutschke as Interpreter.

Others allege, however, when ›anon comm that another political tendency, well-known for its chameleon-like changes of political colouration and Its fawning before Stalinism, was responsible for the tape recordings.

The situation gets 'curlouser and curlouser'. The longer Pallis and the 'Solidarity' group remain silent on this important matter, the more liable people are to infer what they please.

But knowing Dr Pallis's concern for his political integrity we are certain he will not remain silent on the question of who helped to Indict Dutschke. claimed killed and an Israeli task force in Thursday night's ando bases South of The Zionists are obviously emboldened by the headlong retreat of the guerrilla leadership in nearby Jordan, where Arafat has concluded yet another deal with the Royalist regime.

Thursday's raid was the deepest into Lebanon since the 1968 attack on Beirut airport, when an Israeli task force blew up 13 Arab airliners standing on the runways.

A guerrilla spokesman in Beirut yesterday said that heavy casualties had also been inflicted on the Israelis. , The force landed on the Lebanon coast at Sarafant, eight miles South of Sidon, covered by naval and helicopter guns.

Intercepted

Intercepted by guerrillas before they reached their main objectives, the Israeli task force fought a four-hour battle with commandos along the coast.

Before withdrawing, they blew up houses and a canteen and burned down some tents.

As soon as it received news of the attack, the Lebanese Cabinet met in an : emergency session under President Franjieh, followed by a meeting of the State Security Council., These new Zionist blows against the Palestinian liberation struggle coincide with the Royalist ofensive on the guerrillas in Jordan.

And while the Palestinians are forced to fight under a leadership in total disarray, which collaborates with Arab reaction one day only. to dénounce it the next, these attacks will go unpunished.

Power

Thailand

wants trade with Peking THAILAND is considering opening trade relations with China, Foreign Minister Thanet Khoman said in Bangkok yesterday.

The Thai regime, currently waging a ruthless war against communist-led peasant guerrillas, has no political ties with Peking, and in fact recognizes the pro-US Chiang regime in Formossa as the legitimate government of all China.

US Defence Secretary Melvin Laird was in Bangkok last week to discuss increased military aid for the regime's war against the guerrillas.

Nevertheless, Thailand now joins a long list of anticommunist dictatorships either contemplating or actually en-, gaging in trade with China. Sharp words by Baltic ship workers A SERIES of trade union meetings over the last week in the Baltic ports of Gdansk and Szczecin have resulted in sharp exchanges between Polish officials and rank-and-file workers.

Obviously under pressure to make criticisms of trade union subservience to the Gomulka regime ousted last month, chairman of the Gdansk trade union committee Ludwik Grzeskowiak admitted:

'We have been short of obstinacy, and sometimes of courage, to demand consistently the implementation of workers' just demands.' A Polish radio reports that workers at the meeting 'spoke about the effects of a bureauwork style in trade echelons, chiefly the Central Trade Union Council to which motions had been passed for many years from the regions but which have remained sometimes without a reaction'.

Submission

The same report summed up the feeling of the meeting state was said that the present when it commented :

of affairs was a result of bureaucracy in the tradé union apparatus and of subthe , economic administration mission of pressure applied by The new Gierek regime's policy of allowing workers to voice their criticism over the radio continued with a series of interviews this week with Gdansk shipyard workers:

The trade union council said one, had ignored such social matters as a lack of premises where one could eat one's breakfast in comfort.. We know that some people live in conditions which truly mock the principles of sygiene, that distribution ol bonuses has not always been correct, that tools are in short supply, out-of-date and of poor quality..?

Shock work

Work organization was also bitterly criticized :

$600 • shock work, when 500 people and more worked in a unit instead of the usual 50 to 60, resulted in BY A FOREIGN CORRESPONDENT 'liberals'. They must hate having to allow workers the right to attack the bureaucracy over the radio and in trade union and party meetings.

But to continue with the violent repressions begun by Gomulka would have provoked even more bitter reactions from the working class and youth.

Today they bend to the mass movement. But they are already planning new repressions for the future.

Those British Stalinists who feign surpirse and even grief at the real state of affairs in Poland could well do with a little more enlightening at the hands of the Gdansk and Szczecin shipyard workers on the merits of Polish 'socialism'.
