Humbug

The British had been "humbugging' themselves by treating these 'foreigners' as British citizens even though they 'resolved their national identity' a long time ago.

To make matters worse the 1962 immigration laws were never applied to the Irish Republic. Heath Nyerere warning PRIME MINISTER Edward Heath warned Commonwealth Prime Ministers meeting in Singapore yesterday not to allow their unity to be 'fragmented by misunderstanding'.

This was an obvious reference to his S African arms policy.

The Commonwealth was not a court of appeal with the right to sit in final judgement on the policies and actions of its members, he said.

'These are assumptions which lie behind British membership of the Commonwealth, he emphasized.

WELL-WORN

He returned to the wellworn Tory theme of the Soviet ships 'in small, but growing strength' in the Indian Ocean.

President Julius Nyerere of Tanzania had already warned the British government earlier yesterday that it would be responsible for any 'damage' to the Commonwealth if Heath went ahead with arms sales.

FEELINGS

'If anyone fails to understand the depth of Africa's feelings on this matter, then Powell Gazing mistily into a national future when 'we proceed to the historic step of declaring who we are and what we are' ', Powell pronounced the people of the United Kingdom 'distinct and unique'.

This type of talk leaves little doubt about who or what Powell is.

With a nationalist mysticism evoking potent memories of right-wing dictatorships in Europe, Powell is playing on jingo prejudices to reinforce Tory reaction. BY A POLITICAL REPORTER New "Terriers' would not be used in strikes DEFENCE SPOKESMEN that the revitalized Territ play a role in states of eme Commenting on the government's plans to expand the TAVR by 10,500 men, Ministry of Defence spokesman said yesterday that the force's role was primarily to maintain a secure home base for regular forces operating in Europe.

'The TAVR can only be called out by the government when warlike operations are in progress, said the spokesman.

The TAVR is at present 50,000 strong and the expansion will provide for 20 new headquarter company - strength sub - units scattered throughout the country with an infantry role.

This is a new lease of life for the TAVR which emerged out of the old Territorial Army after the Labour administration cut the TA's government support and reduced the squadrons to cadres.

Its headquarters will be based on Tyneside where it was revealed under the Labour government that CS riot gas was being stockpiled at South Shields.

Response

The deputy secretary of the TAVR Association for the North of England, Colonel Ballmain, said that he expected a great response to the new armoured division.

'The forces' home role will be primarily one of training, but we envisage that they will play a supporting role in NATO and help the British Army of the Rhine,' he said.

He could not say what possible connection they would have with states of emergency at home.

Discretion

"This is a question entirely at the discretion of the government. They must decide whether to use the TAVR in states of emergency,' said Colonel Ballmain.

The armoured regiment will be based at Tynemouth and have a detachment at Hebburn.

The NE headquarters for the new infantry units will be at Bishop Auckland and in addition a special Air Service strike force will be based at Prudhoe on Newcastle's outskirts.

Married with a family and still living in Jarrow, he attaches particular importance -'as one who has known poverty and marched in the Jarrow crusade'— to the All Trades Unions Alliance's Charter of Basic Rights which will be discussed at the Alexandra Palace rally.

Treasury evidence submitted to the Wilberforce Court of Inquiry into the power workers' dispute means: no possible increase in the 10 per cent offer to power workers; no more than 8 per cent to postal workers; then we are in line to cut the claims of all sections of workers.

So only the most resolute leadership, prepared to go to the end to defeat the government, and to call for support from • the whole labour movement, can win this strike.

Decisive

The postal workers want to fight. Policy and leadership are decisive.

With prices rocketing and decimalization only weeks away, the Tories are determined to cut real wages. Postmen are target number one. They are fighting on behalf of the whole working class.

There can be no calling off of the strike at any stage for arbitration or courts of inquiry.

The power workers were caught with that trick.

Instrument

Every postal worker knows that the Wilberforce court of inquiry, inflicted by union leaders, is being used as instrument of Tory policy. Even the TUC will not collaborate. So it can only be an all-out fight till the full claim is won. telecommunications or transport.

We know from the council workers' strike that this will be tried. The TUC and every union must declare now that they will not tolerate any use of troops.

Committees

In every town in Britain, trade unionists should immediately organize, through their union branches, factory committees, union district committees, and Trades Councils, for solidarity with the strikers.

Local committees of solidarity should be set up in this way, to prevent scabbing, to organize financial support for the strikers and their families, and to protect them from the attacks and provocations which arose during the powerworkers' work-to-rule.

The postmen's claim can be won, by the mobilization of the whole working-class movement.

The postmen's fight is the fight of every worker.

It is a fight against the Tory government and its attacks.

• Full support and solidarity for the postal workers on strike!

MDW The TUC is now called upon to support the postal workers by every possible means. The financial resources of the TUC must be put at the full disposal of the postal workers, because their fight is the fight of every trade unionist.

Solidarity

Members of every union must press their executives to give full financial support and to prepare solidarity action.

Every union must instruct its members to do nothing that touches on the work of the strikers.

The Parliamentary Labour Party must come out clearly in support of the postal workers and oppose in every possible way every measure proposed by the Tories against the strikers.

The unions must, from the very first day, actively oppose every attempt to organize scabbing in the postal services, Morris pieceworkers prepared for battle, but the previously far less militant PSF workers as well.

A mass body-plant meeting on Thursday unanimously decided to oppose MDW and to financially support the 160 ADO 28 workers directly affected, should Leyland attempt to shut them out.

Morris stewards stress that North side pieceworkers there will have to take similar steps to protect the 50 South side workers who—to their credit —refused to accept MDW and have been returned by the atta hey f They also warn against the company to the factory's unattached labour pool.

policy of verbal opposition to MDW pursued by the local union officials.

NO PROPOSALS While correctly recommending refusal to accept MDW to Thursday's mass meetings, these men made no specific proposals for fighting the company's action and sent the men back into the factory.

This could allow the company to proceed with its attempts to table MDW proposals for the whole of both the body and assembly plants at Oxford, exposing all sections of workers to serious dangers.

Determined to jump the gun in Leyland's favour, one national daily yesterday ascribed it a 'moral victory' at Oxford.
