UNION leaders have accepted a 7-per-cent pay increase on behalf of 160,000 clearing-bank staff, further strengthening the Tory pay norm.

The claim, submitted by the National Union of Bank Employees and the staff associations of the four main banks, was for 8 per cent from October.

Details of the settlement Ion caves per cent announced yesterday show that they have caved in for 7 per cent from next month.

Like the recent council workers' settlement this will be taken as a climb-down to the government's wages policy - this time in the private sector of industry.

NUBE is one of the unions defying the TUC policy on registration under the Industrial Relations Act.
