KNITWEAR workers in 29 border factories will strike from the end of September unless employers improve on their "final' pay offer of £2 a week.
stoppage involving the 5,000 workers seems more than likely following an 80-per-cent majority vote last week in favour of strike action for a £6a-week increase and an extra week's holiday a year.
The General and Municipal Workers' Union executive will meet this week to decide how much notice to give managements of the intention to stop work.
However, it is also reported that the union officials and management are considering a compromise settlement put : forward by local MP David Steel because, it is claimed, a strike lasting five or six weeks would result in a number of firms closing permanently.
