jobs PRESTON dockers are fighting a bid to undermine working conditions through the recruitment of 'casual' dockers.

Some 80 men have left the port register—270-strong at the time of the national docks strike--under the special severance terms recommended by the Jones-Aldington report.

Now the docks management say they cannot handle the current levels of work with the depleted number of dockers available.

A registration board has been formed to sign casuals onto a supplementary register, and applications have been invited through the local Press. So far 144 men have applied.
